About Anchorage

Take a trip to Anchorage, Alaska, where the Last Frontier beckons with unmatched beauty and civilization and wildlife intertwine. Anchorage sits on the shores of Cook Inlet to the west and is flanked by the beautiful Chugach Mountains to the east. It is the largest city in Alaska with more than forty percent of the state's population, yet has a small-town feel and the influence of wildlife everywhere you turn.

Throughout the city, moose reign supreme and it is not unheard of to see a black bear or grizzly bear. Bald and golden eagles are also a common sight. Wolves, foxes, and beavers can be spotted within the urban areas in the unlikeliest of places. Keep your camera close and you will have many opportunities to capture wildlife photos where you least expect it.

Visit Earthquake Park, sight of the second-largest earthquake on record at a magnitude 9.2. The 1964 earthquake devastated this area that was once an affluent neighborhood. Homes dropped into 30-foot crevasses, and the area was completely destroyed. Today there are monuments and trails making it both a beautiful and educational place to explore.

Anchorage also boasts an active arts community and performing arts center. Find unique gifts from local native craftsmen or take in a concert or play. For a true Alaska experience, see the start of the annual Iditarod sled dog race, which originates in downtown Anchorage and stretches some 1000 miles to Nome. It starts on the first Saturday of March each year.

Take a drive along Turnagain Arm past sheer cliffs and see the mountain sheep traverse the rocky outcroppings with ease. Look out across the water at Beluga Point to watch the Beluga whales pass through and observe the eagles soar above and swoop down along the water's edge when the tide is low.

No matter what time of year you plan to visit Anchorage, the memories will last forever and you'll find yourself wanting to come back again. It is a place where man and nature co-exist and unspoiled beauty will take your breath away. It is truly the Last Frontier.
